Cushman & Wakefield is committed to driving greater gender equality in the property industry. Tica Hessing, Human Geographer and Tenant Advisor in the Strategic Consulting Team, discusses her passion for tenant representation and why she’s encouraging more women to get involved.
What is a Tenant Representative and what motivated you to take on the role?
Tenant Representatives work exclusively for the tenant. We help them find the right office space for their business and to negotiate the best deal for them. Working for Cushman & Wakefield has given me the opportunity to apply my expertise in strategic consulting and partner it with tenant representation, allowing me to help clients identify and align strategic business, financial, and operational objectives with their real estate requirements.
What role do women play in Tenant Advisory?
At the moment there is only a 1:10 ratio female representation in the Tenant Advisory field in Sydney. I would like to see this change and want to play a role in encouraging the real estate industry to challenge gender stereo types. Having both women and men representing tenants will bring opportunities for the clients – they will benefit from the different points of view and approaches that come from different life experiences. The more you can reflect and relate to your clients the more likely it is you’ll understand them and provide better services.
Tell us a little about the Women in Tenant Representation Network(WTR)
Women in Tenant Representation Network was founded by Sydney based Tenant Representative Johanna Pudlarz. The group aims to bring together women – and men! – to share expertise and ideas on how to grow, nurture and motivate women to work in this male-dominated space.
I am excited to play a part and meeting with people with similar passions, to improve services for our clients and to create more diversity and inclusion in the industry. The group is in its early stages and all our property peers are welcome to join. Visit the LinkedIn Group to find out more.
What’s Next in Tenant Representation?
As technology continues to innovate, the focus will be on the human element. For Tenant Representatives this means that there will be more focus on how we interact with clients. It will be about emotional and social intelligence. Let's put our heads together – men and women, young and old - and take things to the next level.
